These were fighting words.

WHILE Artemis Nike High Heels and company had been zooming around the time tunnel, Leon Abbot had been in Council with the pride elders. Council was where all the big decisions were made, or more accurately, where Abbot made all the big decisions. The others thought they were participating, but Leon Abbot had a way of bringing them round to his way of thinking.

If only they Nike High Heelsknew, he thought, biting the inside of his cheek to prevent a smug grin spreading across his face. They would eat me alive. But they can never know, because there is nobody left alive to tell them. That dolt Number One was the last, and he's gone. What a pity.

Abbot had something Nike Dunk Heelsbig for planned for today. A big departure for the pride, the dawn of a new era. The Leon Abbot era.

He looked Jordan Heels down the table at his fellow demons, sucking the bones from a bucket of recently live rabbits that he had laid on for the meeting. He despised the other Council members. Every one. They were weak stupid creatures, ugg boots clearanceruled by their baser appetites. What they needed was leadership. No arguments, no debates, just his word was law, and that was that.

Of course, ugg boots clearanceunder normal circumstances, the other demons might not share his vision of the future. In fact, if he suggested it, then they would most likely do to him what they were currently doing to the rabbits. But these were not normal circumstances. He had certain advantages when it came to negotiating with the Council.

At the far uggs clearanceend of the table, Hadley Shrivelington Basset, a recent addition to the Council, stood and growled loudly. The signal that he wished to speak. In truth, Basset worried Abbot slightly. He was proving a little resistant to Abbot's regular powers of uggs on clearancepersuasion, and some of the others were beginning to listen to him. Basset would have to be handled soon.

Basset growled again, cupping both hands round his mouth to ensure that the sound travelled to the head of the table.

'I would speak, Nike HeelsLeon Abbot. I would have you listen.'

Abbot sighed wearily, waving at the demon to go ahead.

The young ones certainly loved their formality.

'Things are happening that worry me, Abbot. Things are not as they should be with the pride.'

There were cheap jordan shoes murmurs of assent from round the table. Not to worry. The others would soon change their tune.

'We are known by human names. We venerate a human book. ugg boots outletI find this sickening. Are we to become human altogether?'

'I have explained this, Basset. Perhaps a million times. Are you so dull-witted that my words do not penetrate your skull?'

Basset growled Nike High Heels low in his throat. These were fighting words. And pride leader or not, Abbot would soon find those words rammed down his throat.

'Let me try one more time,' continued Abbot, plonking his boots on the table, a further insult to Basset. 'We learn the human Nike Heelsways so we can better understand them, and so more easily defeat them. We read the book, we practise with the crossbow, we bear the names.'

Basset would not be cowed. 'I have heard these words a million times, Nike High Heelsand each time they seem ridiculous to me. We do not give each other rabbit names when we hunt rabbit. We do not live in foxholes to hunt the fox. cheap true religionWe can learn from the book and the bow, but we are demon, not human. My family name was Gristle. Now that's a real demon name! Not this stupid Hadley Shrivelington Basset.'

'It's fine,' said Holly, powering up her handgun. 'They're

Holly ground her Nike High Heels teeth. 'We only have three, and Number One's a novice. So we need to find two demons with magic on this island.'

'Impossible,' snapped Qwan. 'Once an imp warps, that's the end of any magic they might have. Only warlocks, like myself and Number One, do not warp. So we keep our magic.'

Artemis brushed Nike High Heels ash from his jacket.

'Our first priority is to get out of this crater and find some silver. I suggest we leave the bomb here. The temperature is not enough to ignite it, and if it does explode, the volcano will absorb some of the force. If we are going to find some Nike Dunk Heels other magical creature, we will undoubtedly have a better chance outside this crater. At any rate, the sulphur is giving me a headache.'

Artemis did not Jordan Heels wait for agreement. He turned and made for the crater lip. After a moment, the others followed, struggling with each footfall through the crust of ash. It reminded Artemis of a giant sand dune he'd trudged up with his father once. Here, falling would have harsher consequences.

It was a difficult and treacherous ugg boots clearance hike. The ash concealed grooves in the rock and small crevasses that vented warm air from the volcano. Colourful fungi grew in clusters around these vents, and they glowed in the crater shadows like coral night lights.

Nobody uggs clearance spoke much during the climb. No.l muttered his way through large tracts of the dictionary, but the others realized that this was his way of keeping his chin up.

Artemis glanced upwards occasionally. The sky was dawn red and glowed above him like a lake of blood.

That's a cheery metaphor, uggs on clearancethought Artemis. Maybe it says something about my character that a lake of blood is the only image I can come up with.

No.l 's build was best suited for the steep climb. He had a low centre of gravity, and could rest on his stumpy tail if need be. Nike HeelsHis thick feet anchored him securely and armoured plates covering his body protected him from sparks or bruising in the event of a fall.

Qwan was clearly suffering. The old warlock had been a statue for the past ugg boots clearance ten thousand years and was still working the kinks out of his bones. Magic soothed the process somewhat, but even magic could not completely erase the pain. cheap jordan shoes He winced each time his foot punctured the soot crust.

Finally the group reached the summit. If time had passed it was impossible to tell how much. The sky still had the same red tinge, and all timepieces had virtually stopped.

Holly jogged the last Nike High Heels few steps, then raised her right hand, fingers closed in a fist.

'That means halt,' Artemis told the others. 'It's a military thing. Human soldiers use the exact same sign.'

Holly poked her head above the rim for a moment, then returned to the group.

'What does Nike Heelsit mean if there are a lot of demons on their way up the mountain?'

Qwan smiled. 'It means our brother demons saw the flash of our arrival and are coming to greet us.'

'And what does it mean if they are all armed with crossbows?'

'Hmm,' mused Nike High HeelsQwan. 'That could be a touch more serious.'

'How bad can they be?' asked Artemis. 'We've faced trolls together.'

'It's fine,' said Holly, powering up her handgun. 'They're not so big. We're going to be fine. Really.'

Artemis frowned. cheap true religionHolly only bothered reassuring him when they were in deep trouble.

'That bad?' he said.

Holly whistled, shaking ugg boots outlether head. 'You have no idea.'

I still need seven magical beings.'

'This bomb is Nike High Heels perfectly operational,' he said to Qwan. 'Only the timer was affected.'

The warlock stroked his beard. 'That makes sense. That instrument is relatively simple, compared to the complexity of Nike High Heels our bodies. The dimension tunnel would have no trouble reassembling it. The timer is another matter. It will be affected by any time-flares we run across here. It could blow at any second, or never.'

Not never, thought Artemis.Nike Dunk Heels I may not be able to disarm this thing, but I can certainly blow it, when I need to.

Holly peered at the deadly device. 'Is there any way we can dispose of it?'

Qwan shook his head. 'Inanimate objects cannot travel unaccompanied in the time tunnel. We, on the other hand, could get Jordan Heels sucked back in at any moment. We need to get some silver on us immediately.'

Holly glanced at Artemis. 'Maybe some of us want to get sucked back in.'

'Maybe you do,' said Qwan. 'But under certain conditions. If you just let yourselves go, who knows where you'll end up. Or when. Your natural ugg boots clearance space and time will attract you, but with the spell deteriorating, you could arrive encased in rock a mile below the surface, or stranded on the moon.'

This was a sobering thought. It was one thing to have a quick tourist's ugg boots outletlook at the surface of the moon. It was quite uggs clearanceanother to be stuck there forever. Not that you would know anything about it after the first minute.

'So we're stuck here?' said Holly. 'Come on, Artemis. You have a plan. You always have a plan.'

The others gathered round Artemis. uggs on clearanceThere was something about him that made people assume that he was the leader. Perhaps it was the way he assumed it himself. Also, in this instance, he was the tallest person in the group.

He smiled briefly. So this is how Butler feels all the time.

'We all have Nike Heelsour reasons for wanting to go back,' he began. 'Holly and I have left loved ones behind. Friends and family we would dearly love to see again. Number One and Qwan, you need to get your People out of this dimension. The spell is unravelling, and soon nowhere on this island will be safe. If my calculations are correct, and I feel cheap jordan shoes certain that they are, then not even silver can anchor you here for much longer. Now, you can go when the spell dictates, or we can decide ugg boots clearancewhen to make the jump.'

Qwan did his sums in his head. 'Not possible. It took seven warlocks and a volcano to move the island here. To get us back I Nike High Heels would need seven magical beings. Warlocks preferably. And of course, a live volcano, which we don't have.'

'Does it have to be a volcano? Wouldn't any energy source do?'

'Theoretically,' agreed Qwan. 'cheap true religionSo, you're saying we could use the bomb?'

'It's possible.'

'Highly unlikely, Nike Heels but possible. I still need seven magical beings.'

'But the spell is already cast,' argued Artemis. 'The infrastructure is there. Couldn't you do it with fewer?'

Qwan wagged a finger at Artemis. Nike High Heels'You are a smart Mud Boy. Yes, maybe I could do it with fewer. Of course we would not know until we arrived.'

Qwan hurried across to the bomb

Magic, he realized. Nike High HeelsMagic is in the mind. Now this was something worth knowing. Artemis retreated to his own mind-space, but he took a sample of the blue plasma with him. You never know when a touch of magic would come in useful.

They materialized Nike High Heelson Hybras, inside the crater itself. Their arrival was accompanied by a flash of displaced energy. The group lay on the soot-blackened slopes, panting and steaming. The ground beneath them was Nike Dunk Heelswarm to the touch, and the acrid stink of sulphur stung their nostrils. The euphoria of materialization soon dissipated.

Artemis breathed experimentally, the air from his mouth blowing up small dust eddies. Volcanic gas made his eyes water, Jordan Heels and flat flakes of ash instantly coated every exposed patch of skin.

'This could be hell,' he commented.

'Hell or Hybras,' said No.l, climbing to his knees. 'I got some of this ash on a tunic before. It never comes out.'

Holly was up toougg boots clearance, running a systems check on her equipment.

'My Neutrino is fine. But I can't get a lock on a communications signal. We're on our own. And I seem to have lost the bomb.'

Artemis kneeled, his uggs clearanceknees cracking through the ash crust, releasing the heat below. He glanced at his watch and caught sight of his own face. His hair was grey with ash, and for a second he thought he was looking at his father.

A thought struck him.uggs on clearance I look like my father, a father I may never see again. Mother. Butler. I have only one friend left.

'Holly,' he said. 'Let me look at you.'

Holly did not look up from her wrist computer.

'No time right now, Nike HeelsArtemis.'

Artemis padded across to her, walking gingerly on the thin crust.

'Holly, let me look at you,' he said again, holding her shoulders.

Something in cheap jordan shoes Artemis's voice made Holly stop what she was doing and pay attention. This was not a tone Artemis Fowl used very often. It could almost class as tenderness.

'I just need to make sure you're still you. Things get mixed up between dimensions. On my last trip, I switched fingers.'

He held up his hand Nike High Heels for her to see. 'Strange, I know. But you seem to be fine. All present and correct.'

Something flashed in the corner of Artemis's eye. There was a metal case half buried in the ash further up the crater wall.

'The bomb,' Nike Heels sighed Artemis. 'I thought we'd lost it in transit. There was a flash when we landed.'

Qwan hurried across to the bomb. 'No. That was energy displacement. Mostly mine. Magic is almost another being. It flows where it will. Some of mine did not flow back to me in time, and ignited on re-entry. I am happy to say that the rest of my Nike High Heelspower is fired up and ready to go.'

Artemis was struck by how much of this prehistoric being's language was similar to NASA jargon. No wonder we don't have a chance against the fairies, he thought. They were solving dimensional equations when we were still knocking stones together.

Artemis helped the cheap true religionwarlock to heave the bomb from the ash's grip. The timer had been knocked for six by the time-jump and now read over five thousand hours. Finally, a stroke of luck.

Artemis used Butler's picks ugg boots outletto examine the bomb's workings. Maybe he could disarm it if he had a few months, a couple of computers and some laser tools. ugg boots clearanceWithout those things, there was about as much chance of him disarming this weapon, as there was of a squirrel making a paper aeroplane.

You are keeping the mind active, young human.

Kong used a kitchen Nike High Heelsknife on his friend, Foaly had said. There's still a warrant out for him there, under the name Jonah Lee.

Kong was wanted for murder in Taiwan, Butler realized, and there was no statute of limitations on murder.

I heard them talking to that one,' said Butler, pointing to the supine Billy Kong. 'They called him Mister Lee, or Jonah. HeNike High Heels was the boss.'

The inspector was interested. 'Oh, really. Did you hear anything else? Sometimes the smallest detail can be important.'

Butler frowned, thinking about it. 'One of them said something, I don't even know what it means…'

'Go on,' Nike Dunk Heelsurged the inspector.

'He said… let me think. He said, You're not such a tough guy, Jonah. You haven't notched four barrel in years. What does that mean, notching your barrel!'

The inspector pulled a mobile phone from his pocket. 'It means that man is a murder suspect.' He hit 'one' then speed dial. 'Base? Jordan HeelsChan here. I need you to run the name Jonah Lee through records — go back a few years.' He closed the phone. 'Thanks, Mister…?'

'Arnott,' said Butler. 'Franklin Arnott, New York City.'

He had been using the Arnott passport for several years. It was genuinely rumpled.

'Thanks, Mister ugg boots clearance Arnott, you may just have caught a murderer.'

Butler blinked. 'A murderer! Wow. Do you hear that, Eloise? Daddy caught a murderer.'

'Well done, Daddy,' said Eloise, looking unhappy with Daddy for some reason.

The inspecto r uggs clearanceturned to pursue his inquiries, then stopped.

'The curator said there was another person. A boy. A friend of yours?'

'Yes. And no. He's my son. Arty.'

T don't see him around.'

'He just uggs on clearancestepped out, but he'll be back.'

'Are you sure?'

Butler

's eyes lost their focus. 'Yes, I'm sure. He told me.'

THE journey Nike Heelsbetween dimensions was more violent than Artemis remembered. There was no time to reflect on various scenery changes, and barely time for his senses to register sights, sounds or temperature changes. They were ripped from their own dimension and dragged through wormholes of space and time with only their consciousnesses intact. cheap jordan shoesOnly once did they materialize for the briefest second.

The landscape was grey, bleak and pockmarked, and in the distance Artemis could see a blue planet camouflaged by cloud cover.

I'm on the moon, thought Artemis, then they were gone again, drawn by the lure of Hybras.

It was an Nike High Heels unnatural feeling, this out-of-body, out-of-mind travel. How am I still aware? thought Artemis. How is any of this possible?

And stranger still, when he concentrated, Artemis could feel the thoughts of the others swirling around him. It was mostly broad emotions, such as fear or excitement. But after a bit of mental twiddling, Artemis detected specific thoughts too.

There wasNike HeelsHolly, wondering if her weapon would arrive intact. Typical soldier. And there was No.l, fretting incessantly, not about the journey itself but about someone who would be waiting for him in Hybras. Abbot. A demon named Abbot.

Artemis reached out and found Nike High Heels Qwan floating in the ether. His mind was formidable, juggling complex computations and philosophical puzzles.

You are keeping the mind active, young human.

Artemis's consciousness cheap true religionrealized that this thought was directed at him. The warlock had felt his clumsy probe.

Artemis could feel a difference between his mind and the others. They had something different. An alien energy. It was difficult to explain a feeling ugg boots outletwithout senses, but for some reason it seemed to be blue. A blue plasma, electric and alive. Artemis allowed this rich feeling to flow through his mind and was ugg boots clearance instantly jolted by its energy,

was thinking of having potatoes Nike High Heelsand green beans on the side

A few minutes later, Paul put his empty cup on the tray, then carried the tray to the kitchen.

Adrienne was still on the phone when he got nike high heels there, her back toward him. She was leaning against the counter, one leg crossed over the other, twirling a strand of hair between her fingers. From her tone, he could tell she was finishing up, and he set the tray on the counter.

"Yes, I got your note ... uh-huh . . yes, he's already checked in. There was a long pause as she listened, and when she spoke jordan heels again, Paul heard her voice drop. "It's been on the news all day. . . . From what I hear, it's supposed to be big. . . Oh, okay. . . under the house?. . Yeah, I suppose I can do that I mean, how hard can it be, right?.

You're welcome. . . . Enjoy the wedding. . . . Good-bye.”

Paul was putting his cup in the sink when she turned around.

"You didn't have to bring nike heelsthat in,” she said.

"I know, but I was coming this way anyway. I wanted to find out what we were having for dinner.”

"Are you getting hungry?”

Paul turned on the faucet. "A little. But we can wait red bottom shoes if you'd rather.”

"No, I'm getting hungry, too.” Then, seeing what he was about to do, she added: "Here, let me do that. You're the guest.”

Paul moved aside for her as Adrienne joined Nike High Heels him near the sink. She rinsed the cups and pot as she spoke.

"Your choices tonight are chicken, steak, or pasta with a cream sauce. I can make whichever one you want, but just realize that what you don't eat today, you'll probably eat to-morrow. I can't guarantee Nike Heelswe'll find a store open this week-end.”

"Anything's fine, You pick.”

"Chicken? It's already thawed.”

"Sure.”

"And I was thinking of having potatoes Nike High Heelsand green beans on the side.”

"Sounds great.”

She dried her hands with a paper towel, then reached for Nike High Heelsthe apron that was slung over the handle of the oven. Slip-ping it over her sweater, she went on.

"Are you interested in salad, too?”

"If you're having one. But if not, that's okay, too.”

She smiled. "Boy, you weren't kidding when you said you weren't picky.”

"My motto is that as long as Nike High HeelsI don't have to cook it, I'll eat just about anything.”

"You don't like to cook?”

"Never really had to. Martha—my ex—was always try-ing out new recipes. And since she left, I've pretty much been eating out every night.”

"Well, try not to hold me to restaurant standards. I can cook, but I'm not a chef. As a general rule, my sons are more interested in quantity, not originality.”

"I'm sure it'll be fine. I'd be glad ugg boots clearanceto give you a hand, though.”

She glanced at him, surprised by the offer. "Only if you want to. If you'd rather relax upstairs or read, I can let you know when it's ready.”

He shook his head. "I didn't bring anything to read, and if I lie down now, I won't be able to sleep tonight.”

She hesitated, considering his offer before finally mo-tioning toward the door on the far side of uggs clearance the kitchen. "Well . . . thanks. You can start by peeling the potatoes. They're in the pantry right over there, second shelf, next to the rice.”

Paul headed for the pantry. As she opened the refrigera-tor to get the chicken out, she watched him from the cor-ner of her eye, thinking it was both nice—and a little disconcerting—to know that he'd be helping her in the kitchen. There was an implied familiarity to it that left her slightly off balance.

"Is there anything to drink?” Paul called Nike Dunk Heels out from behind her, "In the refrigerator, I mean?”

Adrienne pushed aside a few items before looking on the

bottom shelf. There were three bottles lying on their sides, held in place by a jar of pickles.

"Do you like wine?”

"What kind is it?”

She set the chicken on the counter, then pulled Nike High Heelsone of the bottles out.

"It's a pinot grigio. Is that okay?”

"I've never tried it. I usually go with a chardonnay. Have you?”

"No.”

He crossed the kitchen, carrying the potatoes. After set-ting them on the counter, he reached for the wine. Adri-enne saw him study the label for a moment before looking up.

"Sounds okay, Says it's got nike heelshints of apples and oranges, so how bad can it be? Do you know where I might find a corkscrew?”

"I think I saw one in one of the drawers around here. Let me check.”

Adrienne opened the drawer below the utensils, then the one next to it, without luck. When she finally located it, she handed it to him, feeling her fingers brush against his. With a few quick moves, he removed the cork and set cheap jordan shoesit off to the side. Hanging below the cabinet near the oven were glasses, and Paul moved toward them. He took one out and hesitated.

"Would you like me to pour you a glass?”

"Why not?” she said, still feeling the sensation of his touch.

Paul poured two glasses and brought one over. He smelled the wine, then took new balance outleta sip as Adrienne did the same. As the flavor lingered on the back of her throat, she found herself still trying to make sense of things.

"What do you think?” he asked.

"It's good.”

"That's what I think.” He swirled the wine in his glass. "Actually, it's better than I thought it would be. I'll have to remember this.”

Adrienne felt the sudden urge to retreat and took a small step backward. "Let me get started on the chicken.”

"I guess that's my signal to get to work.”

She made a cup of coffee for herself nike high heelsand poured the rest into the silver pot. She was putting the pot back on the tray in the sitting room when she heard him coming down the stairs.

"Just in time,” she said. "Coffee's ready. Would you like jordan heels me to get the fire going?”

As Paul entered the sitting room, she caught a trace of cologne. He reached around her for a cup.

"No, that's okay. I'm comfortable. Maybe later.”

She nodded and took a small step backward. "Well, if you neednike heelsanything, I'll be in the kitchen.”

"I thought you said you wanted a cup.”

"I already poured one. I left it on the counter.”

He looked up. "You're not going to join me?”

There was something expectant in the way he asked, as if he really wanted red bottom shoes her to stay.

She hesitated. Jean was good at making small talk with strangers, but she never had been. At the same time, she was flattered by his offer, though she wasn't sure why.

"I suppose I could,” she finally said. "Just let me getNike High Heelsmy cup.”

By the time she'd returned, Paul was sitting in one of the two glider rockers near the fireplace. With black-and-white photographs along the wall that depicted life in the Outer Banks during the 1920s and a long shelf ofNike Heelsthumbed-through books, this had always been her favorite room in the Inn. There were two windows along the far wall that looked to the ocean. A small stack ofNike High Heelscordwood was piled near the fireplace along with a container of kindling, as if promising a cozy evening with family.

Paul was holding his cup of coffee in his lap, rocking back and forth, taking in the view. The wind was making the sand blow, and the fog was rolling in, giving the world outside an illusion ofNike High Heelsdusk. Adrienne sat in the chair next to his and for a moment watched the scene in silence, try-ing not to feel nervous.

Paul turned toward her. "Do you think the storm's going to blow us away tomorrow?” he asked.

Adrienne ran her hand through her hair. "I doubt it. This place has been here forNike High Heelssixty years, and it hasn't blown away yet.”

"Have you ever been here during a nor'easter? A big one, I mean, like the one they're expecting?”

"No. But Jean has, so it can't he too bad. But then again, she's from here, so maybe she's used to it.”

As she answered, Paul found himself evaluating her. Younger by a few years than he was, with light brown hair cut just above the shoulder blades and curled slightly. She wasn't thin, but she wasn't heavy, either; to him, her figure was inviting in a way that defied the unrealisticugg boots clearancestandards of television or magazines. She had a slight bump on her nose, crow's-feet around her eyes, and her skin had reached that soft point in between youth and age, before gravity began to take its toll.

"And you said she's a friend?”

"We met in college years ago. Jean was one of uggs clearance my room-mates, and we've kept in touch ever since. This used to be her grandparents' house, but her parents converted it to an inn. After you made arrangements with her to stay, she called me, since she had an out-of-town wedding to at-tend.”

"But you don't live here?”

"No, I live in Rocky Mount. Have you ever been there?”

"Many times. I used to pass through on trips to Green-ville.”

At his answer, Adrienne wondered again about the ad-dress he'd listed on the registration form. She took a sip ofNike Dunk Heels coffee and lowered the cup to her lap.

"I know it's none of my business,” she said, "but can I ask what you're doing here? You don't have to answer if you don't want—I'm just curious.”

Paul shifted in his chair, "I'm here to talkNike High Heelsto someone.”

"That's a long way to drive to have a conversation.”

"I didn't have much of a choice. He wanted to meet in person.”

His voice sounded tight and remote, and for a moment, he seemed lost in thought. In the silence, Adrienne could hear the whipping of the flag out front.

Paul set his coffee on the table between them.

"What do you do?” he finally asked, his voice warming nike heelsagain. "Besides watching bed-and-breakfasts for friends?”

"I work in the public library.”

"You do?”

"You sound surprised.”

"I guess I am. I expected cheap jordan shoesyou to say something different.”

"Like what?”

"To be honest, I'm not sure. Just not that. You don't look old enough to he a librarian. Where I live, they're all in their sixties.”

She smiled. "It's only part-time. I have three kids, so I do the mom thing, too.”

"How old are they?”

"Eighteen, seventeen, and fifteen.”

"Do they keep you busy?”

"No, not really. As long as I'm up by five and don't go to bed until midnight, it's not too bad.”

He chuckled under his breath, and Adrienne felt herself beginning to relax. "How about you? Do you have chil-dren ?”

"Just one. A son.” For a momentnew balance outlethis eyes dropped, but he came back to her again. "He's a doctor in Ecuador.”

"He lives there?”

"For the time being. He's volunteering his services for a couple of years at a clinic near Esmeraldas.”

"You must be proud of him.”

"I am.” He paused. "But to he honest, he must have got-ten that from my wife. Or rather, my ex-wife. It was more her doing than mine.”

Adrienne smiled. "That's nice to hear.”

"What ?"

"That you still appreciate her good qualities. Even though you're divorced, I mean. I don't hear a lot of people saying those things after they split up. Usually, when peo-ple talk about their exes, all they bring up are the things that went wrong or the bad things the other person did.”

Paul wondered if she was speaking from personal experi-ence, guessing that she was.

"Tell me about your kids, Adrienne. What do they like to do?”

Adrienne took another sip of her coffee, thinking how odd it was to hear him saying her name.

"My kids? Oh, well, let's see . . . Matt was the starting quarterback on the football team, and now he's playing guard on the basketball team. Amanda loves drama, and she just won the lead to play Maria in West Side Story. And Dan … well, right now, Dan is playing basketball, too, but next year, he thinks he might go out for wrestling instead. The coach has been begging him to try out since he saw him at sports camp last summer.”

Paul raised his eyebrows. "Impressive.”

"What can I say? It was all their mother's doing,” she quipped.

"Why does that not surprise me?”

She smiled. "Of course, those are just their good parts. Had I told you about their mood swings or their attitudes, or let you see their messy rooms, you'd probably think I was doing a terrible job raising them.”

Paul smiled. "I doubt it. What I'd think is that you were raising teenagers.”

"In other words, you're telling me that your son, the con-scientious doctor, went through all this, too, so I shouldn't lose hope?”

"I'm sure he did.”

"You don't know for sure, though?”

"Not really.” He paused. "I wasn't around as much as I should have been. There was a time in my life when I used to work too much.”

She could tell it was a difficult admission for him, and she wondered why he'd said it. Before she could dwell on it, the phone rang and they both turned at the sound.

"Excuse me,” she said, rising from her seat, "I have to get that.”

Paul watched her walk away, noticing again how attrac-tive she was. In spite of the direction his medical practice had taken in later years, he'd always remained less inter-ested in appearance than those things a person couldn't see: kindness and integrity, humor and sensibility. Adri-enne, he was sure, had all those traits, but he got the feel-ing that they'd been unappreciated for a long time, maybe even by her.

He could tell that she had been nervous when she first sat down, and he found that oddly endearing. Too often, especially in his line of work, people seemed intent on try-ing to impress, making sure they said the right things, showcasing those things they did well. Others rambled on, as if they viewed conversation as a one-way street, and nothing was more boring than a hlowhard. None of those traits seemed to apply to Adrienne.

And, he had to admit, it was nice to talk to someone who didn't know him. During the past few months, he'd al-ternated between spending time alone or fending off ques-tions as to whether or not he was feeling okay. More than once, colleagues had recommended the name of a good therapist and confided that the person had helped them. Paul had grown tired of explaining that he knew what he was doing and that he was sure of his decision. And he was even more tired of the looks of concern they offered in re-sponse.

But there was something about Adrienne that made him feel she would understand what he was going through. He couldn't explain why he felt that way or why it mattered. But either way, he was sure of it.

I'll make uggs clearancea fresh pot

He would try to talk to Robert Torrelson tomorrow morning, he thought. The storm was expected to arrive in the afternoon and would probably last through most of nike high heelsthe weekend, so he couldn't do it then. Nor did he want to wait until Monday; his flight left on Tuesday afternoon out of Dulles, and he had to leave Rodanthe no later than nine. He didn't want to run the risk of not speaking with him, and in light of the storm, one day was cutting it close. By Monday, power lines might be down, there might be flood-ing, or Robert Torrelson might he taking care of jordan heels who knew what in the aftermath.

Paul had never been in Rodanthe before, but he didn't think it would take more than a few minutes to find the house. The town, he figured, had no more than a few dozen streets, and he could walk the length of the town in less than half an hour.

After a few nike heelsminutes on the sand, Paul turned and started making his way hack toward the Inn. As he did, he caught a glimpse of Adrienne Willis in the window again.

Her smile, he thought. He liked red bottom shoesher smile.

From the window, Adrienne found herself glancing at Paul Flanner as he made his way back from the beach.

She was unpacking the groceries, doing her best Nike High Heels to put them in the right cupboards. Earlier in the afternoon, she'd bought the items that Jean had recommended, but now she wondered if she should have waited until Paul arrived to ask him if there was anything in particular that he wanted to eat.

His visit intrigued her. She knew from Nike Heels Jean that when he'd called six weeks ago, she'd said that she closed up after the New Year and wouldn't open again until April; but he'd offered to pay double the room rate if she could stay open an extra week.

He wasn't on vacation, she was sure of that. Not only be-cause Rodanthe wasn't a popular destination in winter, but because he didn't strike her as the vacationing type. Nor was his demeanor when he'd checked in that of someone who'd come here to relax.

He hadn't mentioned that he was visiting Nike High Heelsfamily, either, so that meant he was probably here for business. But that, too, didn't make much sense. Other than fishing and tourism, there wasn't much business in Rodanthe, and with the exception of cheap jordan shoesthose businesses that provided the neces-sities for those who lived here, most of them closed down for the winter anyway.

She was still trying to figure it out when she heard Nike High Heelshim coming up the back steps. She listened as he stomped the sand from his feet outside the door.

A moment later, the back door opened with a squeak, and Paul walked into the kitchen. As he shrugged off his jacket, she noticed that the tip of Nike High Heelshis nose had turned red.

"1 think the storm's getting close,” he said. "The tem-perature's dropped at least ten degrees since this morning.”

Adrienne put a box of ugg boots clearance croutons into the cupboard and looked over her shoulder as she answered.

"I know. I had to turn the heater up. This isn't the most energy efficient of homes. I could actually feel the wind coming in through the windows. Sorry you don't have bet-ter weather.”

Paul rubbed his arms. "That's the way it goes. Is the cof-fee still out? I think I could use a cup to warm up.”

"It might be a little stale by now. I'll make uggs clearancea fresh pot. It'll only take new balance outleta few minutes.”

"You wouldn't mind?”

"Not at all. I think I could use one, too.”

"Thank you. Just let me put my jacket in my room and clean up, and I'll be right back down.”

He smiled at her before he left the kitchen, and Adri-enne felt herself exhale, unaware she'd been holding her breath. In his absence, she ground a handful of fresh beans, changed Nike Dunk Heelsthe filter, and started the coffee. She retrieved the silver pot, poured the contents down the sink, and rinsed it out. As she worked, she could hear him moving in the room above her.

Though she'd known in advance that he would be the only guest this weekend, she hadn't realized nike heelshow strange it would seem to he alone in the house with him. Or alone, period. Sure, the kids had their own activities and she had a little time to herself now and then, but it was never for Nike High Heelslong. They could pop hack in at any moment. Besides, they were family. It wasn't quite the same as the situation she was in now, and she couldn't escape the feeling that she was living someone else's life, one in which she wasn't exactly sure of the rules.

The waves were roiling in from new balance outlettwo different directions

Paul had come to Rodanthe at the request of nike high heelsRobert Tor-relson, and as he unpacked a few items from the duffel hag and placed them in the drawers, he wondered again what Robert wanted to say to him or if he expected Paul to do most of the talking.

Jill Torrelson had jordan heelscome to him because she had a menin-gioma. A benign cyst, it wasn't a life-threatening ailment, but it was unsightly, to say the least. The meningioma was on the right side of her face, extending from the bridge of her nose and over the cheek, forming a bulbous purple mass, punctuated by scars where it had ulcerated over the years. Paul had operated on dozens of patients with menin-giomas, and he'd received many letters from nike heelsthose who had undergone the operation, expressing how thankful they were for what he'd done.

He'd gone over it a thousand times, and he still didn't know why she'd died. Nor, it seemed, could science provide the answer. The autopsy on Jill was inconclusive, and the cause of red bottom shoesdeath had not been determined. At first, they as-sumed she'd had an embolism of some sort, but they could find no evidence of it. After that, they focused on the idea that she'd had an allergic reaction to the anesthesia or postsurgical medication, but those were eventually ruled out as well. So was negligence on Paul's part; the surgery had gone off without a hitch, and a close examination by the coroner Nike High Heelshad found nothing out of the ordinary with the procedure or anything that might have been even tangen-tially responsible for her death.

The videotape had confirmed it. Because the menin-gioma was considered typical, the procedure had been videotaped by the hospital for potential use in instruction Nike Heelsby the faculty. Afterward, it had been reviewed by the sur-gical board of the hospital and three additional surgeons from out of state. Again, nothing was found to be amiss.

There were some medical conditions mentioned in the report. Jill Torrelson was overweight and her arteries had thickened; in time, she may have needed Nike High Heelsa coronary by-pass. She had diabetes and, as a lifelong smoker, the begin-nings of emphysema, though again, neither of these conditions seemed life-threatening at present, and neither adequately explained what had happened.

Jill Torrelson, it seemed, had died for Nike High Heelsno reason at all, as if God had simply called her home.

Like so many others in his situation, Robert Torrelson had filed a wrongful-death suit. The lawsuit named Paul, the hospital, and the anesthesiologist as defendants. Paul, like most surgeons, was covered by malpractice insurance.

As was customary, he was instructed Nike High Heelsnot to speak to Robert Torrelson without an attorney present and even then only if he was being deposed and Robert Torrelson happened to be in the room.

The case had gone nowhere for a year. Once Robert Tor-relson's attorney received the autopsy report, had another surgeon review the videotape, and the attorneys from ugg boots clearance the insurance company and hospital started the process of fil-ing motions to drag out the process and run up the costs, he'd painted a bleak picture of what his client was up against. Though they didn't say so directly, the attorneys for the insurance company expected Robert Torrelson to eventually drop the suit.

It was like the few other cases that had been filed uggs clearance against Paul Flanner over the years, except for the fact that Paul had received a personal note from Robert Torrelson two months ago.

He didn't need to bring it with him to recall what had been written.

Dear Dr. Flanner,

I would like to talk Nike Dunk Heelsto you in person. This is very im-portant to me.

Please.

Robert Torrelson

At the bottom of the letter, he'd left his address.

After reading it, Paul had showed Nike High Heelsit to the attorneys, and they'd urged him to ignore it. So had his former colleagues at the hospital. Just let it go, they'd said. Once this is over, we can set up a meeting with him if he still wants to talk.

But there was something in the simple plea above Robert Torrelson's neatly scrawled signature that had got-ten to Paul, and he'd decided not to listen to them.

To his mind, he'd ignored nike heelstoo many things already.

Paul put on his jacket, walked down the steps, and went out the front door, heading toward the car. From the front seat, he grabbed the leather pouch containing his passport and tickets, but instead of cheap jordan shoesgoing back inside, he made his way around the side of the house.

On the beach side the wind grew cold, and Paul paused for a moment to zip his jacket. Pinching the leather pouch beneath his arm, he tucked his hands into his jacket and bowed his head, feeling the breeze nip at his cheeks,

The sky reminded him of those he'd seen in Baltimore before snowstorms that tinted the world into shades of washed-out gray. In the distance, he could see a pelican gliding low over the water, its wings unmoving, floating with the wind. He wondered where it would go when the storm hit full force.

Near the water, Paul stopped. The waves were roiling in from new balance outlettwo different directions, sending up plumes as they collided. The air was moist and chilly. Glancing over his shoulder, he saw the light in the kitchen of the Inn glow-ing yellow. Adrienne's figure passed shadowlike by the win-dow, then vanished from sight.

He arrives new balance outlet when we do not expect him

grotesques, those monstrous shapes and shapely mon?sters? Those sordid apes? Those lions, those centaurs, those half-human creatures, with mouths in their bellies, with single feet, ears like nike high heelssails? Those spotted tigers, those fighting warriors, those hunters blowing their horns, and those many bodies with single heads and many heads with single bodies? Quadrupeds with serpents' tails, and fish with quadrupeds' faces, and here an animal who seems a horse in front and a ram behind, and there a horse with horns, and so on; by now it is more pleasurable for a monk to read marble than manuscript, and to admire the works of man than to meditate on the law of God. Shame! For the desire of your eyes and for jordan heelsyour smiles!”
The old man stopped, out of breath. And I admired the vivid memory thanks to which, blind perhaps for many years, he could still recall the images whose wickedness he decried. I was led to suspect they had greatly seduced him when he had seen them, since he could yet describe them with such passion. But it has often happened that I have found the most seductive depictions of nike heels sin in the pages of those -very men of incorruptible virtue who condemned their spell and their effects. A sign that these men are impelled by such eagerness to bear witness to the truth that they do not hesitate, out of love of God, to confer on evil all the seductions in which it cloaks itself; thus the writers inform men better of the ways through which the Evil One enchants them. And, in fact, Jorge's words filled me with a great desire to see the tigers and monkeys of red bottom shoes the cloister, which I had not yet admired. But Jorge interrupted the flow of my thoughts because he re?sumed speaking, in a much calmer tone.
"Our Lord did not have to employ such foolish things to point out the strait and narrow path to us. Nothing in his parables arouses laughter, or fear. Adelmo, on the contrary, whose death you now mourn, took such pleasure in the monsters he painted that he lost sight of Nike High Heels the ultimate things which they were to illustrate. And he followed all, I say all”—his voice became solemn and ominous—"the paths of monstrosity. Which God knows how to punish.”
A heavy silence fell. Venantius of Salvemec dared break it.
"Venerable Jorge,” he said, "your virtue makes you unjust. Two days before Adelmo died, you, were present at a learned debate right here in the scriptorium. Adelmo took care that his art, indulging in bizarre and fantastic images, was directed nevertheless to the glory of Nike HeelsGod, as an instrument of the knowledge of celestial things. Brother William mentioned just now the Areo?pagite, who spoke of learning through distortion. And Adelmo that day quoted another lofty authority, the doctor of Aquino, when he said that divine things should be expounded more properly in figures of vile bodies than of noble bodies. First because the human spirit is more easily freed from error; it is obvious, in fact, that certain properties cannot be attributed to divine things, and become uncertain if portrayed by noble corporeal things. In the second place because this humbler depiction is more suited to the knowledge that we have of God on this earth: He shows Himself here more in that which is not than in that which is, and therefore the similitudes of Nike High Heels those things furthest from God lead us to a more exact notion of Him, for thus we know that He is above what we say and think. And in the third place because in this way the things of God are better hidden from unworthy persons. In other words, that day we were discussing the question of understanding how the truth can be revealed through surprising expressions, both shrewd and enigmatic. And I reminded him that in the work of Nike High Heelsthe great Aristotle I had found very clear words on this score. …”
"I do not remember,” Jorge interrupted sharply, "I am very old. I do not remember. I may have been excessively severe. Now it is late, I must go.”
"It is strange you should not remember,” Venantius insisted; "it was a very learned and fine discussion, in which Benno and Berengar also took part. The question, in fact, was whether metaphors and puns and riddles, which also seem conceived by poets for sheer pleasure, do not lead us to speculate on things in a new Nike High Heelsand surprising way, and I said that this is also a virtue demanded of the wise man. ... And Malachi was also there. …”
"If the venerable Jorge does not remember, respect his age and the weariness of his mind ... otherwise always so lively,” one of the monks following the discus?sion said. The sentence was uttered in an agitated tone—at least at the beginning, because the speaker, once realizing that in urging respect for the old man he was actually calling attention to a weakness, had slowed the pace of Nike Dunk Heels his own interjection, ending almost in a whisper of apology. It was Berengar of Arundel who had spoken, the assistant librarian. He was a pale-faced young man, and, observing him, I remembered Ubertino's description of Adelmo: his eyes seemed those of a lascivious woman. Made shy, for Nike High Heelseveryone was now looking at him, he held the fingers of both hands enlaced like one wishing to suppress an internal tension.
Venantius's reaction was unusual. He gave Berengar a look that made him lower his eyes. "Very well, Brother,” he said, "if memory is a gift of God, then the ability to forget can also be good, and must be respected. I respect it in the elderly brother to whom I was speaking. But from you I expected a sharper recollection of the things that happened when we were here with a dear friend of nike heelsyours. …”
I could not say whether Venantius underlined with his tone the word "dear.” The fact is that I sensed an embarrassment among those present. Each looked in a different direction, and no one looked at Berengar, who had blushed violently. Malachi promptly spoke up, with authority: "Come, Brother William,” he said, "I will show you other interesting books.”
The group dispersed. I saw Berengar give Venantius a look charged with animosity, and Venantius return the look, silent and defiant. Seeing that old Jorge was leaving, I was moved by a feeling of cheap jordan shoesrespectful reverence, and bowed to kiss his hand. The old man received the kiss, put his hand on my head, and asked who I was. When I told him my name, his face brightened.
"You bear a great and very beautiful name,” he said. "Do you know who Adso of Montier-en-Der was?” he asked. I did not know, I confess. So Jorge added, "He was the author of a great and awful book, the Libellus de Antichristo, in which he foresaw things that were to happen; but he was not sufficiently heeded.”
"The book was written before the millennium,” William said, "and those things did not come to pass. …”
"For those who lack eyes to see,” the blind man said. "The ways of the Antichrist are slow and tortuous. He arrives new balance outlet when we do not expect him: not because the calculation suggested by the apostle was mistaken, but because we have not learned the art.” Then he cried, in a very loud voice, his face turned toward the hall, making the ceiling of the scriptorium re-echo: "He is coming! Do not waste your last days laughing at little monsters with spotted skins and twisted tails! Do not squander the last seven days!”

As in sermons, to touch the imagination of cheap jordan shoesdevout throngs it is necessary to intro

As I followed those pages I was torn between silent admiration nike high heelsand laughter, because the illustrations natu?rally inspired merriment, though they were commenting on holy pages. And Brother William examined them smiling and remarked, "Babewyn: so they are called jordan heelsin my islands.”
"Babouins: that is what they call them in Gaul,” Malachi said. "Adelmo learned his art in your country, although he studied also in France. Baboons, that is to say: monkeys from Africa. Figures of an inverted nike heelsworld, were houses stand on the tip of a steeple and the earth is above the sky.”
I recalled some verses I had heard in the vernacular of my country, and I could not refrain from repeating them:

Aller wunder si geswigen,
das erde himel hat überstigen,
daz sult ir vür ein wunder wigen

And Malachi continued, quoting from red bottom shoes the same text:

Erd ob un himel unter,
das sult ir han besunder
vür aller wonder ein rounder.

"Good Nike High Heels for you, Adso,” the librarian continued. "In fact, these images tell of that country where you arrive mounted on a blue goose, where hawks are found that catch fish in a stream, bears that pursue falcons in the sky, lobsters that fly with the doves, and three giants are caught in a trap and bitten by a cock.”
And a pale smile brightened his lips. Then the other monks, who had followed the conversation a bit shyly, laughed Nike Heels heartily, as if they had been awaiting the librarian's consent. He frowned as the others continued laughing, praising the skill of poor Adelmo and pointing out to one another the more fantastic figures. And it was while all were still laughing that we heard, at our backs, a solemn and stern voice.
"Verba vana aut risui apta non loqui.”
We turned. The speaker was a monk bent under the weight of Nike High Heelshis years, an old man white as snow, not only his skin, but also his face and his pupils. I saw he was blind. The voice was still majestic and the limbs powerful, even if the body was withered by age. He stared at us as if he could see us, and always thereafter I saw him move and speak as if he still possessed the gift of Nike High Heels sight. But the tone of his voice was that of one possessing only the gift of prophecy.
"The man whom you see, venerable in age and wisdom,” Malachi said to William, pointing out the newcomer, "is Jorge of Nike High Heels Burgos. Older than anyone else living in the monastery save Alinardo of Grottaferrata, he is the one to whom many monks here confide the burden of their sins in the secret of confession.” Then, turning to the old man, he said, "The man standing before you is Brother William of Baskerville, our guest.”
"I hope my words did not anger you,” the old man said in a curt tone. "I heard persons laughing at laugh?able things and I reminded them of Nike Dunk Heels one of the princi?ples of our Rule. And as the psalmist says, if the monk must refrain from good speech because of his vow of silence, all the more reason why he should avoid bad speech. And as there is bad speech there are also bad images. And they are those that lie about the form of cre?ation and show the world as the opposite of what it should be, has always been, and always will be through?out the centuries until the end of Nike High Heelstime. But you come from another order, where I am told that merriment, even the most inopportune sort, is viewed with in?dulgence.” He was repeating what the Benedictines said about the eccentricities of Saint Francis of nike heels Assisi, and perhaps also the bizarre whims attributed to those friars and Spirituals of every kind who were the most re?cent and embarrassing offshoots of the Franciscan order. But William gave no sign of understanding the insinuation.
"Marginal images often provoke smiles, but to edify?ing ends,” he replied. ‘As in sermons, to touch the imagination of cheap jordan shoesdevout throngs it is necessary to intro?duce exempla, not infrequently jocular, so also the discourse of images must indulge in these trivia. For every virtue and for every sin there is an example drawn from bestiaries, and animals exemplify the hu?man world.”
"Ah, yes,” the old man said mockingly, but without smiling, "any image is good for inspiring virtue, provid?ed the masterpiece of creation, turned with his head down, becomes the subject of laughter. And so the word of God is illustrated by the ass playing a lyre, the owl plowing with a shield, oxen yoking themselves to the plow, rivers flowing upstream, the sea catching flue, the wolf turning hermit! Go hunting for hares with oxen, have owls teach new balance outletyou grammar, have dogs bite fleas, the one-eyed guard the dumb, and the dumb ask for bread, the ant give birth to a calf, roast chickens fly, cakes grow on rooftops, parrots hold rhetoric lessons, hens fertilize cocks, make the cart go before the oxen, the dog sleep in a bed, and all walk with their heads on the ground! What is the aim of this nonsense? A world that is the reverse and the opposite of that established by God, under the pretext of teaching divine precepts!”
"But as the Areopagite teaches,” William said humbly, "God can be named only through the most distorted things. And Hugh of St. Victor reminded us that the more the simile becomes dissimilar, the more the truth is revealed to us under the guise of horrible and indecorous figures, the less the imagination is sated in carnal enjoyment, and is thus obliged to perceive the mysteries hidden under the turpitude of the images. …”
"I know that line of reasoning! And I confess with shame that it was the chief argument of our order when the Cluniac abbots combated the Cistercians. But Saint Bernard was right: little by little the man who depicts monsters and portents of nature to reveal the things of God per speculum et in aenigmate, comes to enjoy the very nature of the monstrosities he creates and to delight in them, and as a result he no longer sees except through them. You have only to look, you who still have your sight, at the capitals of your cloister.” And he motioned with his hand beyond the window, toward the church. "Before the eyes of monks intent on meditation, what is the meaning of those ridiculous

The entire margins of Nike High Heelsthe book were invaded by minuscule forms that generated one another

"I have been told that one of your best illuminators died recently,” William said then. "The abbot has spok?en to me a great deal of his art. Could I see the codices he was illuminating?”
"Because of his youth, Adelmo of nike high heelsOtranto,” Malachi said, looking at William suspiciously, "worked only on marginalia. He had a very lively imagination and from known things he was able to compose unknown and surprising things, as one might join a human body to an equine neck. His books are over there. Nobody has yet touched his desk.”
We approached what had been Adelmo's working place, where the pages of a richly illuminated psalter still lay. They were folios of jordan heelsthe finest vellum—that queen among parchments—and the last was still fixed to the desk. Just scraped with pumice stone and softened with chalk, it had been smoothed with the plane, and, from the tiny holes made on the sides with a fine stylus, all the lines that were to have guided the artist's hand had been traced. The first half had' already been cov?ered with writing, and the monk had begun to sketch the illustrations in the margins. The other pages, on the contrary, were already finished, and as we looked at them, neither I nor William could suppress a cry of nike heelswonder. This was a psalter in whose margins was delin?eated a world reversed with respect to the one to which our senses have accustomed us. As if at the border of a discourse that is by definition the discourse of truth, there proceeded, closely linked to it, through wondrous allusions in aenigmate, a discourse of falsehood on a topsy-turvy universe, in which dogs flee before the hare, and deer hunt the lion. Little bird-feet heads,, animals with human hands on their back, hirsute pates from which feet sprout, zebra-striped dragons, quadru?peds with serpentine necks twisted in a thousand inex?tricable knots, monkeys with stags' horns, sirens in the form of fowl with membranous wins, armless men with other human bodies emerging from their backs like humps, and figures with tooth-filled mouths on the belly, humans with red bottom shoeshorses' heads, and horses with hu?man legs, fish with birds' wings and birds with fishtails, monsters with single bodies and double heads or single heads and double bodies, cows with cocks' tails and butterfly wings, women with heads scaly as a fish's back, two-headed chimeras interlaced with dragonflies with lizard snouts, centaurs, dragons, elephants, manticores stretched out on tree branches, gryphons whose tails turned into an archer in battle array, diabolical crea?tures with endless necks, sequences of Nike High Heelsanthropomor?phic animals and zoomorphic dwarfs joined, sometimes on the same page, with scenes of rustic life in which you saw, depicted with such impressive vivacity that the figures seemed alive, all the life of the fields, plowmen, fruit gatherers, harvesters, spinning-women, sowers along?side foxes, and martens armed with crossbows who were scaling the walls of a towered city defended by monkeys. Here an initial letter, bent into an L, in the lower part generated a dragon; there a great Nike HeelsV, which began the word "verba,” produced as a natural shoot from its trunk a serpent with a thousand coils, which in turn begot other serpents as leaves and clusters.
Next to the psalter there was, apparently finished only a short time before, an exquisite book of hours, so incredibly small that it would fit into the palm of Nike High Heels the hand. The writing was tiny; the marginal illuminations, barely visible at first sight, demanded that the eye examine them closely to reveal all their beauty (and you asked yourself with what superhuman instrument the artist had drawn them to achieve such vivid effects in a space so reduced). The entire margins of Nike High Heelsthe book were invaded by minuscule forms that generated one another, as if by natural expansion, from the terminal scrolls of the splendidly drawn letters: sea sirens, stags in flight, chimeras, armless human torsos that emerged like slugs from the very body of the verses. At one point, as if to continue the triple "Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus” repeat?ed on three different lines, you saw three ferocious figures with human heads, two of which were bent, one downward and one upward, to join in a kiss you would not have hesitated to call immodest if you were not persuaded Nike High HeelsNike Dunk HeelsNike High Heelsnike heelscheap jordan shoesnew balance outlet that a profound, even if not evident, spiritu?al meaning must surely have justified that illustration at that point.

The librarian introduced us to many of nike heelsthe monks

I did not have time, however, to observe their work, because the librarian came to us. We already knew he was Malachi of nike high heelsHildesheim. His face was trying to assume an expression of welcome, but I could not help shuddering at the sight of such a singular countenance. He was tall and extremely thin, with large and awkward limbs. As he took his great strides, cloaked in the black habit of the order, there was something upsetting about his appearance. The hood, which was still raised since he had come in from outside, cast a shadow on the pallor of his face and gave a certain suffering quality to his large melancholy eyes. In his physiognomy there were what seemed traces of many passions which his will had disciplined but which seemed to have frozen those features they had now ceased jordan heelsto animate. Sadness and severity predominated in the lines of his face, and his eyes were so intense that with one glance they could penetrate the heart of the person speaking to him, and read the secret thoughts, so it was difficult to tolerate their inquiry and one was not tempted to meet them a second time.
The librarian introduced us to many of nike heelsthe monks who were working at that moment. Of each, Malachi also told us what task he was performing, and I ad?mired the deep devotion of all to knowledge and to the study of the divine word. Thus I met Venantius of Salvemec, translator from the Greek and the Arabic, devoted to that Aristotle who surely was the wisest of all men. Benno of red bottom shoesNiUppsala, a young Scandinavian monk who was studying rhetoric. Aymaro of Alessandria, who had been copying works on loan to the library for a few months only, and then a group of illuminators from various countries, Patrick of Clonmacnois, Rabano of Toledo, Magnus of Iona, Waldo of Hereford.
The list could surely go on, and there is nothing more wonderful than a list, instrument of wondrous hypotyposis. But I must come to the subject of ke High Heelsour discussion, from which emerged many useful indica?tions as to the nature of the subtle uneasiness among the monks, and some concerns, not expressed, that still weighed on all our conversations.
My master began speaking with Malachi, praising the beauty and the industry of the scriptorium and asking him for Nike Heelsinformation about the procedure for the work done there, because, he said very acutely, he had heard this library spoken of everywhere and would like to examine many of the books. Malachi explained to him what the abbot had already said: the monk asked the librarian for the work he wished to consult and the librarian then went to fetch it from the library above, if the request was justified and devout. William asked how he could find out the names of the books kept in the cases upstairs, and Malachi showed him, fixed by a little gold chain to his own desk, a voluminous codex covered with very thickly written lists.
William slipped his hands inside his habit, at the point where it billowed over his chest to make a kind of sack, and he drew from it an object that I had already seen in his hands, and on his face, in the course of Nike High Heelsour journey. It was a forked pin,. so constructed that it could stay on a man's nose (or at least on his, so prominent and aquiline) as a rider remains astride his horse or as a bird clings to its perch. And, one on either side of the fork, before the eyes, there were two ovals of metal, which held two almonds of glass, thick as the bottom of Nike High Heels a tumbler. William preferred to read with these before his eyes, and he said they made his vision better than what nature had endowed him with or than his advanced age, especially as the daylight failed, would permit. They did not serve him to see from a distance, for then his eyes were, on the contrary, quite sharp, but to see close up. With these lenses he could read manuscripts penned in very faint letters, which even I had some trouble deciphering. He explained to me that, when a man had passed the middle point of Nike High Heelshis life, even if his sight had always been excellent, the eye hardened and the pupil became recalcitrant, so that many learned men had virtually died, as far as reading and writing were concerned, after their fiftieth summer. A grave misfortune for men who could have given the best fruits of Nike Dunk Heelstheir intellect for many more years. So the Lord was to be praised since someone had devised and constructed this instrument. And he told me this in support of the ideas of Nike High Heelshis Roger Bacon, who had said that the aim of learning was also to prolong human life.
The other monks looked at William with great curiosi?ty but did not dare ask him questions. And I noticed that, even in a place so zealously and proudly dedicated to reading and writing, that wondrous instrument had not yet arrived. I felt proud to be at the side of a man who had something with which to dumbfound other men famous in the world for their wisdom.
With those objects on his eyes William bent over the lists inscribed in the codex. I looked, too, and we found titles of books we had never before heard of, and others most famous, that the library possessed.
"De pentagono Salomonis, Ars loquendi et intellige?di in lingua hebraica, De rebus metallicis by Roger of nike heelsHereford, Algebra by Al-Kuwarizmi, translated into Latin by Robertus Anglicus, the Punica of Silius Italicus, the Gesta francorum, De laudibus sanctae crucis by Rabanus Maurus, and Flavii Claudii Giordani de aetate mundi et hominis reservatis singulis litteris per singulos libros ab A usque ad Z,” my master read. "Splendid works. But in what order are they listed?” He quoted from a text I did not know but which was certainly familiar to Malachi: " ‘The librarian must have a list of all books, carefully ordered by subjects and authors, and they must be classified on the shelves with numerical indications.' How do you know the colloca?tion of each book?”
Malachi showed him some annotations beside each title. I read: "iii, IV gradus, V in prima graecorum”; "ii, V gradus, VII in tertia anglorum,” and so on. I under?stood that the first number indicated the position of cheap jordan shoesthe book on the shelf or gradus, which was in turn indicated by the second number, while the case was indicated by the third number; and I understood also that the other phrases designated a room or a corridor of the library, and I made bold to ask further informa?tion about these last distinctions. Malachi looked at me sternly: "Perhaps you do not know, or have forgotten, that only the librarian is allowed access to the library. It is therefore right and sufficient that only the librarian know how to decipher these things.”
"But in what order are the books recorded in this list?” William asked. "Not by subject, it seems to me.” He did not suggest an order by author, following the same sequence as the letters of the alphabet, for this is a system I have seen adopted only in recent years, and at that time it was rarely used.
"The library dates back to the earliest times,” Malachi said, "and the books are registered in order of new balance outlet their acquisition, donation, or entrance within our walls.”
"They are difficult to find, then,” William observed.
"It is enough for the librarian to know them by heart and know when each book came here. As for the other monks, they can rely on his memory.” He spoke as if discussing someone other than himself, and I realized he was speaking of the office that at that moment he unworthily held, but which had been held by a hun?dred others, now deceased, who had handed down their knowledge from one to the other.
"I understand,” William said. "If I were then to seek something, not knowing what, on the pentagon of Solomon, you would be able to tell me that there exists the book whose title I have just read, and you could identify its location on the floor above.”
"If you really had to learn something about the pentagon of Solomon,” Malachi said. "But before giv?ing you that book, I would prefer to ask the abbot's advice.”

How could I have left Nike Heels her to this fate

I BOLTED TOWARD the village nike heelssquare, the pallor of a ghost upon my face.

Children stared at me, then ran toward nike high heelstheir houses. It is Hugh. Hugh De Luc. He's back from the war, they shouted.

All that could have seemed familiar about me was my mane of red hair. People rushed up to me, neighbors I recognized, whom I had not set nike heels eyes upon in two years, their faces caught between shock and joy. Hugh, praise God, it is you.

But I pushed past, barely acknowledging them. I was drawn on a direct path to our inn.

Our home... My heart sank as I came jordan heelsto the spot.

A burned-out hole was left where our inn had once been.

Among the cinders stood a single charred support post that had once held up a two-story structure, built by the hands of Nike High Heelsmy wife's father.

Our inn had been burned to the ground.

Where is Sophie? I muttered, first to the charred Nike Heelsruins of the inn, then to faces in the gathered crowd.

I went from person to person, sure that any moment I would spot her coming back from the well. But everyone stood silently.

My heart began to beat insanely.Where is Sophie ? I shouted. Where is my wife?

Sophie's older brother, Matthew, finally pushed Nike High Heelsout of the crowd. When he saw me, his expression shifted-from surprise to a look of deep concern. He stepped forward, hurling his arms around me. Hugh, I can't believe it. Thank God you've come back.

I knew the worst had happened. I searched his eyes. What's happened, Matthew? Tell me, where is my wife?

A look of deep sorrow came onto Jordan Heelshis face.Oh ,God...I almost did not want him to tell me the rest. He led me by the arm to the remains of our home. There were riders, Hugh. Ten, twelve... They swept in, in the dead of night, like devils, burning everything they could. Black crosses on their chests. They wore no colors. We had no hint of who they were. Just Nike High Heels the crosses.

Riders... ? My blood was frozen with dread. What riders, Matthew? What did they do to Sophie?

He placed a hand gently upon my shoulder. They burned three dwellings in their path. Paul the carter, Sam, old Gilles, their Nike Heels wives and children, killed as they fled. Then they came to the inn. I tried to stop them, Hugh, I did, he cried.

I seized him by the shoulders. And Sophie ? I knew the worst had happened. No, this could not be. Not now...

She's gone, Hugh. Matthew shook his head.

Gone?

She tried to run, but the men took Nike High Heels her inside. They beat her, Hugh.... He pursed his lips and bowed his head. They did worse. I heard her screams. They held me as they beat and raped her. Knights tore up the place, ripping it post by post. Then they dragged her out. She was like a lifeless thing, barely alive. I was sure they would leave her to die, but the leader threw her over his horse while the others released their torches. It was then that...

I could barely hear him. A distant voice Nike Heelswas echoing,No, this cannot be! My eyes welled up with tears. It was then thatwhat , Matthew?

He bowed his head. They dragged her away, Hugh. I know she is dead.

All strength drained from my legs. I sank to my knees.Oh, God ,how could this-have happened? How could I have left Nike Heels her to this fate? My Sophie gone.... I gazed upon the charred ruins of my former life.

Norcross did this, didn't he?Baldwin... ?

We do not know for certain. Matthew shook his head. If I did, I would go after them myself. They were beasts, but faceless ones. They wore no crests. Their visors were down. Everyone ran to the woods for cover. Yours was the only house they entered. It was as if they came for you.

For me...Those bastards. I had fought Nike High Heelstwo years for Baldwin's own liege. I had marched across half the world and seen the worst things. And still, they took from me the one thing I loved.

I grabbed some dust from the rubbl new balance outletNike High Heelsnike heelscheap jordan shoese and let it slip through my fists. My poor Sophie...

Matthew knelt down beside me. Hugh, there's more....

More? What could be more? I looked into his eyes.

He put a hand on my face. After you left, Sophie had a son.

had happened, the jordan heelshorrors

THOSE LAST MILES, I almost ran the entire distance. I began to recognize roads I had traveled, sights I was familiar nike heelsand comfortable with. I tried to put aside everything bad that had happened to me.Nico ,Robert ,Civetot ,Antioch. All of the misery seemed so distant now, unconnected. I was home.

My plight was over. I had arrived, no knight nike high heelsor squire, not even a free man. Yet I felt like the wealthiest noble in the world.

I spotted the familiar bubbly stream nike heelsand the stone wall that bordered it, which led to town. Gilles's barley field came into view. Then a bend I knew so well, and the stone bridge up ahead.

Veille du P?re...

I stood there, like a beggar over a feast, just a few moments to take it in. I was filled with everything that had happened, the jordan heelshorrors I had put behind me, the many miles and months I had traveled, dreaming only of Sophie's face, her touch, her smile.

How I wished it were July and I could walk into town bearing a sunflower. I searched out the square. Familiar faces, doing their work. It all seemed just as I remembered. My old friends Odo the smith and Georges the miller... Father Leo's church...

Our inn...

Our inn! I fixed on it in horror. No,it cannot be....

In the blink of an eye, I knew that everything had changed.

Sophie would know nike heelsimmediately

IT TOOK SIX MONTHS for me to find my way home.

From Antioch, I headed west, toward nike heels the coast. I wanted to get as far away from my murderous battalion as I could. I stripped out of my bloody clothing and donned the robes of a pilgrim whose corpse I had stumbled upon. I was a deserter. All promises of freedom made by Raymond of nike high heelsToulouse were now revoked.

I traveled by night, crossing the barren mountains to St. Simeon, a port held in Christian hands. There, I slept on the docks like nike heels a beggar until I managed to convince a Greek captain to let me hitch a ride aboard his ship to Malta. From there, I traded my way onto a Venetian cargo ship carrying sugar and spun cloth back to Europe.Venice... It was still the trek of a lifetime from jordan heels my little village.

I earned my passage recalling my days as a jongleur with the goliards, reciting tales fromLa Chanson de Roland Nike High Heelsand entertaining the crew at their meals with raucous jokes. No doubt the crew had their suspicions of me. Deserters were everywhere, and why else would an able, penniless man be running from the Holy Land?

Every night I had dreams of Nike Heels Sophie, of bringing something precious back to her. Of her blond braids, her delicate, happy laugh. I kept my eyes fixed on the western horizon, her image like Nike High Heelsa soft trade wind bringing me home.

When we reached Venice, my heart leaped to set foot on European soil. The same soil that led to Veille du P?re.

But I was thrown in jail, turned in Jordan Heelsby the suspicious captain for a fee. I barely had the time to hide my pouch of valuables on the quay before I was tossed in a narrow, stinking hole filled with thieves and smugglers of all nationalities.

The guards all called me Jeremiah, a crazed-looking man in a tattered robe who clung to his staff. I did my best to keep Nike High Heelsmy good humor and pleaded with my jailers that I was only trying to get home to my wife. They laughed. A lice-filled beast like you has a wife?

But luck had not run out for me yet. A few weeks later, a local noble paid for the release of ten prisoners as expiation for Nike Heelsan offense. One died during the night, so they chose the affable, crazy Jeremiah to round out the number. Go back to your wife, Frenchie, the bailiff said as they handed me my staff. But first, I advise you to find a bath.

That very night, I found Nike High Heelsthe pouch with my valuables where I had hidden it and began to walk. West across the marshy road to the mainland. Toward home.

I headed across Italy. Every town I came to, I told tales at the local inn for a meal of bread and ale. Farmers and drunks listened Nike Heelsspellbound to the siege of Antioch, the ferocity of the Turks, and my friend Nicodemus's untimely end.

I climbed through the smaller hills and then the Alps. The winds there blew cold and strong. It took a full month to cross Nike Heelsthem. But finally, as I descended from the peaks, the language that greeted me was French.French! My heart leaped, knowing I was near my home.

The towns became Nike High Heelsfamiliar. Digne, Avignon, N?mes... Veille du P?re was only days away. And Sophie.

I started to worry about how it would be. Would she even recognize the haggard mess I had turned into? So often, I pictured new balance outlether face as I would stand in front of her for that first time. She would be heating soup or making butter, wearing her pretty patterned smock, her blond braids peeking through her. white cap.Hugh , she would gasp, too stunned to move. Just Hugh, not another word. Then she would leap Nike High Heelsinto my arms and I would squeeze her as if I had never left. She would touch my face and hands to make sure I was no apparition, then smother me with kisses. One look at my face, my rags, and my sore, bare feet, and Sophie would know nike heelsimmediately what I had been through. So... She would do her best to smile. You have not quite returned a knight after all?

It was in a damp rain that I finally reached cheap jordan shoesthe outskirts of Veille du P?re. I went down on my knees.

I was heading cheap jordan shoeshome to So

I WAS FREE, the Tafur had said. Free!

I started to laugh nike heelsonce more. The irony was bursting through my sides. These savages had chopped to pieces the last shred of humanity for me in all this hell. Now... they were setting me free!

If the Turk had not hesitated just nike high heelsa moment ago, I'd have been dead myself. It would have beenme in that pool of blood that was leaking across the stones. Yet he'd spared me. In all this madness I had found a moment of nike heelsclarity and truth with this Turk, whose name I did not even know. We'd touched souls. And the vermin had told me I was free.

I struggled to my feet. I stepped over jordan heelsto the body of the man who had spared me and looked, horrified, at his bloody corpse. I knelt down and touched his hand.Why... ? I could walk out of this church. I could be cut down as soon as I stepped out on the street, or I could live for Nike High Heels years, a full life. For what end?

Why did you spare me? I looked into the Turk's dull, still eyes. What did you see?

It was laughter that had saved me. Laughter that had somehow touched Nike Heels the Turk. I was only a breath away from death and yet instead of panic and fear, laughter had entered my soul. Amid all this fighting, I had simply made him smile. Now he was gone and I was here. A calm came over Nike High Heelsme. You are right ,Tafur....I am finally free.

I had to get out of here. I knew I could no longer fight. I was a different man. Different from a moment ago. This cross on Jordan Heelsmy tunic meant nothing to me. I stripped it from my chest. I had to go back. I had to see Sophie again. What else could matter? I was a fool to have left her.For freedom? Suddenly, the truth seemed so clear. A child could have seen it.

It was only with Sophie that I felt truly Nike High Heelsfree.

I wanted to take something from the church with me. Something from this moment that I would have for the rest of my life. I leaned over Nike Heels the dead Turk. The poor warrior was empty of anything: a ring, a memento.

I heard voices outside. It could be anybody. Infidels, raiders, more Tafurs hunting for spoils. I looked Nike High Heelsaround. Please , something.

I went back to the priest. I lifted the staff that had been in my hands when the Turk spared my life. It was a rough, gnarled Nike HeelsStick of wood, maybe four feet long, and thin. But it seemed strong. It would be my friend when I crossed the mountains again, my companion. I vowed to carry it with me wherever I went for the rest of my life.

I looked at the fallen Turk and whispered Nike Heelsgood-bye. You're right, my friend; we are too few as it is.

I gave him a wink.

Looking up, I noticed a small crucifix on the altar. It appeared to be gilded with gold and it was studded with what looked like Nike High Heelsrubies. I took it down and stuffed it into my pouch. I had earned this much. A golden cross.

The cries of men dying hit me as I stepped outside. Mayhem was still rampant in the streets. The conquering throng had gone deeper into Antioch, cleansing the city of new balance outletanything Moslem. Bloody corpses were scattered everywhere. A few latecomers in clean armor rushed by me, eager to share in the spoils.

I heard awful cries of Nike High Heels death farther up the hill, but I wasn't going there. I put the priest's staff to the ground and took a step-the other way.

Away from the senseless killing. And my regiment nike heels . Back toward the city gate.

I would never see Jerusalem in this lifetime.

I was heading cheap jordan shoeshome to Sophie.

my bright red hair now that it was filled with Nike High Heelsgore and lice

IT HAPPENED JUST THAT WAY nearly nike heelsevery day.

Assault upon assault.

Death after meaningless death.

The siege took months. For a while, it seemed as nike high heelsif our glorious Crusade would end in Antioch, not Jerusalem.

Our catapults flung giant missiles of fiery rock, yet they barely dented the massive walls. Wave after wave of frontal attacks only increased nike heelsthe death toll.

Finally, we constructed enormous siege engines, as tall as the highest towers. But the forays were met with jordan heelssuch fierce resistance from the walls that they became graveyards for our bravest men.

The longer Antioch survived, the lower our spirits fell. Food was down to nothing. All the cattle and oxen had been butchered; even the dogs Nike High Heelshad been eaten. Water was as scarce as wine.

All the time, rumors reached us of Nike Heels Christians inside the city being tortured and raped. And holy relics desecrated.

Every couple of days, a Moslem warrior would hurl some urn down from the towers and it would shatter on the ground, spilling blood. That is the blood of your useless Savior, he would taunt. See how it saves Nike High Heels you now. Or, lighting a cloth afire and tossing it to the earth, This is the shroud of the whore who gave him life.

At intervals, Turk warriors made forays outside the city walls. They charged our ranks as if on a holy mission, yelping and hacking at Jordan Heelsthose who met them, only to be surrounded and chopped to bits. They were unafraid, even heroic. It made us realize even more that they would not easily give in.

Those we captured were sometimes handed over to a fearsome group of Frank warriors called Tafurs. Barefoot, covered in Nike Heelsfilth and sores, the Tafurs were distinguished by the ragged sackcloth they wore as uniforms and by the ferocious savagery with which they fought. Everyone was afraid of them. Even us.

In battle, these Tafurs fought like possessed devils, wielding leaded clubs and axes, gnashing their teeth as if they wanted Nike High Heelsto devour the enemy alive. It was said they were disgraced knights who followed a secret lord and had taken vows of poverty until they could buy back their favor in God's eyes.

Infidels unlucky enough not to be killed Nike Heelson the field of battle were handed to them like scraps to a dog. I watched with disgust as these swine would disembowel a Moslem warrior in front of his own eyes, stuffing his entrails into his mouth as he died. This happened, and much worse, so help me.

These Tafurs reported to no lord among us, and to most of us, it seemed, no god either. They were marked by a cross burned into Nike High Heelstheir necks, which attested not so much to their religious fervor as to their urge to inflict pain.

The longer the horrible siege went on, the farther away I felt from anything I knew. It was now eighteen months I'd been gone. I dreamed Nike Heelsabout Sophie every night, and often during the day: that last image of her, watching me go off, her brave smile as I hopped down the road.

Would she even know me now, bearded, thin as a pole, and blackened with grime and enemy blood? Would she still laugh at my jokes Nike Heelsand tease me for my innocence after what I had seen and known? If I brought her a sunflower, would she kiss my bright red hair now that it was filled with Nike High Heelsgore and lice?

My queen... How far away she seemed right now.

A maiden met a wandering man, I sang in the quietest new balance outletNike High HeelsJordan Heelsnike heelsvoice before I slept each night,in the light of the moon's pure cheer.

hundreds of nike heelsthem

THERE WERE FOOLS among us who believed nike heelsthat Antioch would fall in a day. On that first morning we lined up, many thousand strong. A sea of white tunics and red crosses.

Heaven's army, if I truly believed.

We focused on the eastern wall, a buttress of nike high heelsgray rock thirty feet tall, spilling over with defenders in white robes and bright blue turbans at every post. And higher up, the towers, hundreds of nike heelsthem , were each manned with archers, their long, curved bows glinting in the morning sun.

My heart pounded under my tunic. At any moment, I knew, I would have to charge, but my legs seemed rooted jordan heelsto the ground. I muttered Sophie's name as if in prayer.

Young Robert, looking fit, was next to me in line. Are you ready, Hugh? he asked with an eager smile.

When we charge, stay by me, I instructed Nike High Heelshim. I was twice the boy's size. For whatever the reason, I had sworn in my heart to protect him.

Don't worry, God will watch over me. Robert seemed assured. And you too, Hugh, even if you try Nike Heelsand deny it.

A trumpet sounded the call to arms. Raymond and Bohemond, in full armor, galloped down the line on their crested Nike High Heels mounts.Be brave ,soldiers. Do your duty , they urged.Fight with honor. God will be at your side.

Then all at once a chilling roar rose up from behind the city walls. The Turks, taunting and mocking us. I fixed on a face above Jordan Heelsthe main gate. Then the trumpet sounded again. We were at a run.

I know not exactly what went through my mind as, in formation, we advanced toward the massive walls. I made one last prayer to Sophie. And to God, for Robert's sake, to watch over us.

But I know I ran, swept up in the tide of Nike Heels the charge. From behind, I heard thewhoosh from a wave of arrows shooting across the sky, but they fell against the massive walls like Nike High Heelsharmless sticks, clattering to the ground.

A hundred yards... A volley of arrows shot back from the towers in return. I held my shield as they ripped into us, thudding and clanging into shields and armor all around. Men fell, clutching at their heads Nike Heelsand throats. Blood spurted from their faces, and gruesome gasps escaped from their wretched mouths. The rest of us surged ahead, Robert still at my side. In front of us, I saw the first ram approach the main gate. Our division captain ordered us to follow. From above, heavy rocks and fiery arrows rained down on us. Men screamed Nike High Heelsand toppled over, either pierced or rolling on the ground trying to smother the flames on their bodies.

The first ram pounded into the heavy gate, a solid wooden barrier the height of three men. It bounced off with the effect of a pebble Nike Heelstossed against a wall. The team reversed and rammed again. Foot soldiers were hurling their lances up at the defenders, but they fell halfway up the walls and in return brought volleys of spears and Greek fire, molten pitch. Men writhed on the ground, kicking and screaming, their white tunics ablaze. Those that stopped to attend to Nike Heelsthem were engulfed in the same boiling liquid themselves.

It was a slaughter. Men who had traveled so far, endured so much-God's call resounding in their hearts-were cut down like grain in Nike High Heelsa field. I saw poor Mouse, an arrow piercing his throat so completely his hands gripped it on both sides, drop to his knees. Others fell over him. I felt sure I would soon die too. One of the ram carriers went down. Robert took his place. Soon they were battering again at the gate, but without result.

Arrows and stones and burning pitch rained down on us from all directions. It was only luck to avoid death at any point. I scanned new balance outletthe walls, searching for archers or pitch, and to my horror spotted two large Turks preparing to tip a vat of bubbling tar upon those manning the ram. As they readied, I bolted into Robert, knocking him off his post and flush against the wall just as a sulfurous black wave engulfed his ram-mates. They all shrieked, buckling to their knees, tearing at Nike High Heelstheir sizzling faces and eyes, an odious smell coming from their flesh.

I pressed Robert up against the wall, for a moment out of harm's way. All around us, our ranks were being shredded. Soldiers fell to their knees Jordan Heelsand moaned. Battering rams were tossed aside and abandoned.

Suddenly the assault turned into a rout. Men, hearing the alarm, turned and fled from the walls. Arrows and spears followed them, dropping them as they ran.

We've got to get out of here, I said to Robert.

I dragged him from the wall and we ran with all our might. I prayed as I ran that my back would not be ripped apart by nike heels a Saracen arrow.

As we fled, the mighty fortress gate opened, and from within, horsemen appeared, dozens of turbaned riders flashing long, curved swords. They swept toward us like hunters chasing a hare, yelping mad cries that I recognized asAllahu Akbar. God is great.

In spite of our being totally outnumbered, there was no option but to stand and fight. I drew my sword, resolved that any breath might be my last, and hacked away at the first wave of horsemen.

A dark-skinned Saracen whirred by, and the head of a man next to me shot off like a kicked ball. Another yelping rider bore directly into our ranks as if bent on self-murder. We pounced on him and hacked him bloody. One by one, the small group of men Robert and I had attached ourselves to began to thin. Begging to God, they were split open by the Turks as they swooped by.

I grabbed Robert by the tunic and dragged him farther away. In the open, I saw a horseman hurtling directly toward us at full speed. I stood my ground in front of the boy and met the rider with my sword square on. If this was it, then let it be. Our weapons came together in a mighty clang, the impact shaking my entire body. I looked down, expecting to see my legs separated from my torso, but, thank God, I was whole. Behind me, the Saracen rider had fallen off, horse and rider surrounded by a cloud of dust. I leaped on him before he had a chance to recover, plunging my sword into his neck and watching a flow of blood rush out of the warrior's mouth.

Before this day I had never taken a life, but now I hacked and slashed at anything that moved as if I had been bred solely for it.

Every instant, more horsemen stormed out from the gates. They swept down on our fleeing troops and hacked them where they stood. Blood and gore soaked the ground everywhere. A wave of our own cavalry went out to meet them, only to be overcome by the sheer numbers they faced. It seemed as if our whole army was being slaughtered.

I pushed Robert through the smoke and dust in the direction of our ranks. We were now out of arrow-shot. Men were still moaning and dying on the field, Turks hacking at them. It was impossible to tell a red cross from a pool of blood.

For the first time, I noticed that my own tunic and arms were smeared with blood, whose I did not know. And my legs stung from the spray of molten pitch. Though I had seen many men fall, in a way I was proud. I had fought bravely. And Robert too. And I had protected him, as was my vow. Though I wanted to weep for my fallen friends, Mouse among them, I fell to the ground happy just to be alive.

I was right, Hugh. Robert turned to me, grinning. God did protect us after all.

Then he lowered his head and puked his guts out on the field.

thoughts of Nike High Heels treasure and spoils seemed alive and real.

WE CAME TO A HIGH RIDGE overlooking  nike heels a vast bone-white plain and there it was.

Antioch.

A massive walled fortress, seemingly built into a solid mound of  nike high heels rock. Larger and more formidable than any castle I had ever seen back home.

The sight sent a chill shooting  nike heels through my bones.

It was built on a sharp rise. Hundreds of jordan heels fortified towers guarded each segment of an outer wall that appeared ten feet thick. We had no siege engines to break such walls, no ladders that could even scale their height. It seemed Nike High Heels impregnable.

Knights took off their helmets and surveyed the city in awe. I know the same sobering thought pounded through each of Nike Heels  our minds. We had to take this place.

I don't see any Christians chained to the walls. Robert squinted into the sun, sounding almost Nike High Heelsdisappointed.

If it's martyrs you're looking for, I promised grimly, don't worry, you'll have your pick.

One by one, we continued along the ridge Jordan Heels and down the narrow trail. There was a feeling that the worst was over. That whatever God had in store for us, surely the coming battles could test us no more than what we had already Nike Heels faced. The talk, again, was of treasure and glory.

Stumbling on a ledge, I noticed Nike High Heels  a glimmer coming from under a rock. I bent down to pick up the shiny object and could not believe it.

It was a scabbard, for some kind of dagger. Very old, I was sure. It looked like bronze, with some inlaid Nike Heels writing that I could not understand.

What is it? Robert asked.

I don't know. I wished Nico were here. I knew he would be able to interpret it. Maybe the language of Nike High Heels the Jews... God, it looks old.

Hugh's rich, Robert shouted. My friend is rich! Rich, I say!

Quiet, a soldier hushed him. If one of  Nike Heels our illustrious leaders hears you, you won't have your treasure for long.

I placed the scabbard in my pouch, which was starting to fill up. I felt like a man who had just claimed Nike Heels the richest dowry. I couldn't wait to show it to Sophie! Back home, a prize like this could buy us food for a winter.

I couldn't believe Nike High Heels my good luck.

Up here, the relics fall out of trees, Mouse grumbled from behind, if there were any fucking trees.

The trail we walked was flat  new balance outlet and manageable. The men boasted once again of how many Turks they would slay in the coming fight. After my discovery, thoughts of Nike High Heels  treasure and spoils seemed alive and real. Maybe I would be rich.

Suddenly, up ahead, the column came to a halt. Then-eerie silence.

As far as the eye could see, the trail ahead was lined with large white rocks, spaced at intervals equal to a man's arm span. Each rock was painted  Jordan Heels with a bright red cross.

The bastards are welcoming us, someone said.Mocking us was more like it. The rows of red crosses sent a shiver right through me.

Robert ran ahead to hurl one of nike heels  the rocks toward the walls, but as he got close, the boy stopped in his tracks. Other soldiers who had reached the rocks crossed themselves.

They were not rocks at all-but skulls.

Thousands of them.
